The initial challenge

Measuring engagement in real time, without waiting

Decathlon, a retailer that designs, manufactures, tests and sells sporting goods in more than 1,665 stores across 64 countries, sees its employees as an investment at the heart of its mission.

The company recognizes from the outset that customer satisfaction depends on the well-being of its people internally. In the fall of 2020, following the upheaval brought on by COVID, Émilie Pelletier, CIRC – National HR Manager for Decathlon Canada, was looking to put in place a structured process to improve communication, gather feedback and work collaboratively with the 2,000 team members working for Decathlon Canada.

At Decathlon, every day is a new starting line where mistakes are levers for learning. Measuring the impact of the initiatives put in place therefore has to happen continuously in order to truly move forward.

The HR Manager for Decathlon Canada notes:

We wanted a platform that would let us be more agile and get an accurate measure of engagement in real time. Waiting a year to take a reading is far too long.

The Amélio difference

What tipped the scales

Before considering Amélio, the Decathlon Canada team used another popular tool on the market to measure employee engagement. The HR Manager for Decathlon Canada notes that the following elements convinced them to choose Amélio.

  • The platform's ease of use
  • The unique employee experience features
  • The customization capabilities in the surveys and the analysis of results
  • The ease of switching from French to English in the surveys and the platform

So far, the engagement surveys have helped bring to light some very specific areas for improvement, making it possible to put preventive measures in place instead of operating in reactive mode.

The initiative also helps confirm the strengths within the various teams, which is very important since these aspects are not always communicated.

With more than 20 stores spread across Canada, cultural differences were identified from one province to another, and even from one city to another!

Having data segmented by different groups makes it possible to build customized action plans that are tightly aligned with each location's needs, rather than centralized plans for the entire country.

The HR Manager for Decathlon Canada also notes that, on top of the outstanding support, another key advantage of the Amélio platform is its great flexibility and high potential for customization.

Indeed, these elements allow Decathlon Canada's HR team to make the most of the tool's full power to easily deploy and analyze other types of surveys measuring, for example, diversity within the teams.

Becoming a star player

Giving credibility to human resources

The human resources department sometimes has a hard time justifying the contribution it makes within a company.

Thanks to Amélio, Émilie Pelletier now has data that backs up not only the department's choice of action priorities, but also the impact of those actions.

A strategic asset

Amélio as a strategic asset in today's job market

The National HR Manager for Decathlon Canada sees Amélio as a tool that brings a great deal of agility to HR. It is a strategic asset for engagement and retention in today's job market.

Maéva Reffo, Employer Brand and HR Communications Lead, points out that the engagement surveys run with the platform are a great help in developing Decathlon Canada's employer brand.

Indeed, employee input makes it possible to enhance and put in place communication strategies that make the retailer's employer brand shine, in order to attract and retain the best players.

Émilie Pelletier adds:

Amélio makes it possible to apply, in a very concrete way, the employee well-being values that Decathlon holds dear. The platform is also an excellent tool for getting less experienced managers quickly up to speed on employee engagement.

Amélio's ease of implementation is so appreciated by Decathlon Canada that the initiative and the benefits gained from using Amélio were recognized by Decathlon's head office in France. And even better! That is how leadership came to launch a global initiative with Amélio.
